Unfortunately not. I'm afraid of it being too expensive in time and money, and could never bring myself to buy a car over $100. How much effort does it take to be competitive?

When I was most active it was back in 2002-2003. Back at that time 1/10 scale 4wd electric touring cars were very popular. I was competitive at the local track in town and I was running mostly 2nd hand stuff. Even with that I was probably spending $500-600 a year on racing. The class died out IMO, because it became an arms race, where equipment was king. Also the races were short at 5 minutes per heat. Now it appears that with the batteries and motors being much better you can have longer races.

I have no idea what it cost now to race though. Likely the same amount. It's actually not that bad given how much fun racing can be.

I used to run 10th scale touring also! and offroad, 1/18, and occasionally enduro, stopped for a while though, have a few trophies though :) did go to a dirt track race last year and ran a 1oth s/c truck and my 5th scale s/c truck, was alot of fun

I raced electric off road and electric oval back in the 90's. Off road was much cheaper to run and be competitive. Tires lasted forever, and you didnt have to have the fastest car to win. Just make the least mistakes . In oval I would spend an average of $75 a week (all my grass cutting income). Tires would only last a couple weekends and were almost $40 each., and you needed 3 or 4 different compounds. Cell matched battery packs were $100, dyno tuned motors were $75. Given the speeds (60mph) if you crashed you usually broke something. It was fun but I decided if I was going to waste that much money I should be racing go karts. Go karts were more expensive to get started, but after the initial buy in to get your cart, engine, safety gear it wasnt much more. Once I moved out up in classes though I was competing with guys spending hundreds a week. Guys with $5000 motors that needed a refresh every 2 weekends. I couldn't afford to be competitive and had to hang it up to buy my first house.

Interesting, that's pretty reasonable. It looks like things could be pretty exciting too, and thankfully with injury only likely in freak accidents.

Yeah, racing seems to be quite the way to turn a large amount of money into a small amount of money. My personal compromise was to get a used $30 wheel and Simraceway. Compared to that, anything is quite a bit of an outlay.
